The Electric Highway Project: Precast Concrete Solutions for EV Charging Stations

The Electric Highway Project: Precast Concrete Solutions for EV Charging Stations

Before the development of the Electric Highway, electric vehicle (EV) drivers faced significant challenges due to a lack of charging infrastructure. Range anxiety—the fear of running out of battery power—was a major obstacle, limiting the practicality of EVs for long-distance travel and daily commutes. To address this issue and promote widespread EV adoption, the provincial government launched the Electric Highway initiative, aiming to establish a comprehensive network of EV charging stations across British Columbia.

Precast Solutions for a Sustainable Future

We are proud to have been a key partner in BC Hydro’s Electric Highway project, providing crucial precast solutions for the construction of EV charging stations. Our precast concrete EV pads offer a durable, reliable, and efficient foundation for these essential infrastructure components, ensuring long-lasting performance in all weather conditions.
By supplying these precast elements, we played an important role in accelerating the development of the Electric Highway, helping to increase the availability of EV charging stations across the province.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of the Electric Highway project is the result of a collaborative effort involving utilities, local governments, Indigenous communities, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and private sector partners. Grosso Precast’s involvement reflects our commitment to supporting sustainable transportation and contributing to a greener future.

Key Achievements and Milestones

  • 155 charging sites were constructed, equipped with over 310 fast chargers, enabling seamless travel for EV drivers across British Columbia.
  • Since 2018, the number of public charging stations in BC has grown by nearly 350%, reaching over 5,300 by August 2024.
  • The provincial government has made substantial investments in the project, with funding through programs such as the GoElectric Public Charger Program and Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program.
